Not all bugs are ugly
August 10, 2006 on 11:07 am | In All, Home Life | 3 CommentsOne of the ‘highlights’ of living in the tropical climate of Cancun is the variety of wildlife you’ll come across.
I’ve basically learned to trust nothing that flies or crawls as it almost certainly has a sting or bite.
This little fella came strolling across our patio recently. About an inch long he’s some kind of shield bug.
It seemed like a good opportunity to test the macro facility out on my new camera. I took this pic from about 3 inches away, as you can see it came out quite good.
Most of the things that fly or crawl in Cancun are much more ugly looking, so I’ll spare you the pics of those.
Tropical Storm Chris set to miss Cancun
August 1, 2006 on 4:00 pm | In All, Cancun News, Home Life | 1 CommentJust heard on the TV that meteorologists are keeping a close eye on Tropical Strom Chris which is developing some way off to the South West. With Hurricane Wilma still very much in everyones memory here in Cancun any potential hurricane is closely monitored.
Live from Miami
July 28, 2006 on 10:37 am | In All, Home Life, Web Work | 2 CommentsMade it to Miami no problems and bought my new laptop on Wednesday, it’s a Toshiba 1.73 Centrino with 1meg RAM and 100 Gig HDD. Got a good deal on it but there seems to be a problem with the battery not charging up so we’ll be taking it back to the shop today.
Miami, is not really how I expected it. It has a lot more Latin influence than I thought, with Spanish seemingly spoken moreso than English. Lots of coconut palms everywhere make it feel very much like Cancun, and the weather is not much different, although it is a little cooler today.

Off to Miami
July 24, 2006 on 10:39 pm | In All, Home Life, Web Work | No CommentsTomorrow I’m off to Miami for a few days to buy my new laptop. Staying with a friend and think there may well be some parties too. Back on Friday but should be able to post to the blog from there too, that’s a great thing about this software you can post from anywhere.
Our Secret Bank
July 20, 2006 on 5:45 pm | In All, Home Life | No CommentsToday, we went to pay our rent. Here in Cancun there are no automatic or online payments, at least if there is we haven’t managed to figure it out yet. You have to physically go to the bank and ask them to transfer money from one account to another.
At the main banks you take a ticket and sit in the rows upon rows of chairs and wait until your number is shown, and only then can you proceed to the counter. Sometimes, you’ll receive a ticket showing #643 when the current ticket is #487. Now you can either sit tight and wait for a couple of hours or you can go off and do something else and hope you get back in time for your ticket. Many is the time we’ve returned back to have just missed our number, so you have to start over or give up.
Back ‘Home’ Again… Eventually
July 16, 2006 on 8:33 pm | In All, Home Life | 2 CommentsWell, after what turned out to be almost 5 weeks of vacation we are back in sunny Cancun. We had a great trip over to England, the only downside being England’s performance in the World Cup - forever the underachievers.
Besides that, we spent a lot of quality time with my family who we rarely get to see. It was especially good to see my nieces and nephews who all fell in love with our daughter Daniella. The weather was good and we enjoyed lots of BBQ’s and were also there for my sisters twins 3rd birthday party. Of course, my Mum also did a top job in feeding me (I’ve put on 10lbs) and putting up with my moaning and griping. Love you Mum!
