Twelve habitats comprise the 1.3 million acres of Sian Ka’an and with a human population of only 2000, visiting the reserve would allow you the chance to experience one of the few remaining vestiges of unspoiled earth. In 1986, the land became part of the UNESCO ‘Man and the Biosphere’ program, an attempt to “integrate human activities without compromising other forms of life contained within its boundaries.” At present, this cohabitation exists in coastal regions and small fishing villages. And at such an impressive ratio, the exclusive Sian Ka’an is sanctuary to both an array of ecosystem and the eco-savvy tourists that visit them.

At $4 a day, the reserve oversees a number of tours, escorting its visitors to the most traditional form of vacationing in the Yucatan. Canal and Bird-watching excursions provide a non-restricting means to explore habitats diverse of the flora and fauna, 103 mamalia, and 336 bird species that inhabit Sian Ka’an.

Canal Tour

Follow a 1200 year old Mayan trade route.

Visit ruins within the reserve.

Observe lush flora and fauna unique to the reserve.

Float down a freshwater river.

Learn Mayan history.

All-Day Canal Tour

Travel the waters by 23′ open-air boat.

Experience the different ecosystems, plants, and birds.

Navigate a natural canal Mayan trade route.

Float along a freshwater canal as the current carries you downstream.

Lunch and snacks provided.

Walk through a Sian Ka’an garden.

Cool off swimming at a cenote.

Price: $70/person. Transportation is provided to and from ME Cancun and other resorts of the Cancun hotel zone. The reserve limits its patronage to 12 people a day and recommends visitors bring a swimsuit, towel, and sunblock.

Sunset Bird Watching Tour
(Operates December – May)

Tour of the largest natural protected area in the state of Quintana Roo.

Includes bird watching, swimming and snorkeling in a cenote, and watching the sunset over reserve lagoons.

Dinner

The Biosphere spans 75 miles, north to south, making up nearly one third of the Caribbean coast of Mexico. By visiting the reserve and taking any one of its tours, a typical Cancun vacation becomes personalized, something as unique as Sian Ka’an itself.

Dean has come and gone and to be honest it was nothing worse than the storms we get here every month or two. Sat there waiting for something to happen and it didnt, it hardly even rained. The new blog we ran though was an oustanding success - around 120,000 unique vistors in less than a week including 58,000+ on Tuesday. It also attracted widespread press interest and I ended up doing 3 interviews, one for the tv and two for the radio.

The videos below I took 12 hours either side of the hurricane and show that Cancun has not really been affected at all.

The first major storm of the 2007 hurricane season looks to be upon us. It’s still way to early to tell whether Tropical Storm Dean (soon to be Hurricane Dean) will affect Cancun at all, let alone score a direct hit. But after the devastating Hurricane Wilma of 2005, it’s one that all in Cancun are keeping a close eye on.

One thing is 99% sure though and that is this storm will become Hurricane Dean sooner or later and possibly go as high as a Category 3. Several of the forecasted models put the Yucatan Peninsula in it’s path at the moment, but we are going to have to wait several more days before it’s time for panic stations.

I’ve known via the grapevine for a little while but today I noticed that on the official Blue Bay website that they have a banner running announcing their new name “Temptation” Cancun which will take effect in December 2007.

I find the choice of name a little strange as it seems that the hotel have been trying to lose their “swingers hotel” label for some years now, and I’m not sure the new name Temptation will help with this. That said they do have a new General Manager and maybe the name change reflects a future change in direction. I certainly hope not but suppose we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Here’s a link to my forum where we have been discussing the latest changes Temptation Cancun. Also if you’re looking to book a stay at Temptation then you should definitely check out Alpharooms while you are researching prices - they seem to be far cheaper than anywhere else.

Last August I made this post concerning the famous Fat Tuesday closing down. I’m pleased to see that it has now reopened but at a different location. The manager emailed me a month or two ago to let me know and invited me for a daiquiri there, so the least I could do was tell everyone that it is open again!

Fat Tuesday is now located at Embarcadero, which is right by the tall observation tower and next to where the pirate ships depart from at Km 4.5 or so. The new place is smaller and not on the beach, but it’s a nice location to watch the sun go down and see the watercraft as they cross from the lagoon to the ocean. As far as I can tell it’s the exact same concept as the old place, they are also part of the 2 for 1 meals discount card so check it out next time you’re in the area.

Every year, between the months of March and August, Cancun is affected by a phenomenon called “sea lice”.

These little beasties are not lice at all, rather they are the microscopic larvae of the thimble jellyfish. The larvae get between your skin and your bathing suit and cause large red welts to appear that itch like crazy. Given that it’s the areas that your swimsuit hides that are affected it’s not nice at all.

Last week we were doing one of our regular booze cruises to Isla Mujeres and we came across about twenty or so ribbons of the adult jellyfish, you can see one pictured above left. The ribbons were about 6-10 feet wide and stretched as far as the eye could see.

Looks like I’ve let things slip again.

I thought I’d better get a couple of entries in before the end of the month as it’s been 3 months since I last updated. I’ve said it before and, no doubt I’ll let things go again, but I am going to try to post more often. The blog is still receiving around 60/100 visits a day so I ought at least write something for people to read.

I think part of the problem was I was writing too many long entries and messing around editing and uploading photos and videos. A “quick” 10 minute post often ended up taking half an hour or more, and became a bit of a chore.

I’ll try to post shorter more snappy articles and not insist on a photo with almost every post, as I used to. In fact, I’m going to set up half a dozen or so blog entries right now and then let the auto post feature publish them over the next week or so.

So, hang around and check back for hopefully a more frequently updated Cancun blog.

Word on the street is that Mambo Cafe the popular downtown Cancun club which features live salsa bands and dancing is to open a new venue in the Hotel Zone. Mambo has always been one of my favourite clubs in Cancun and I think the latest addition will work well, as long as it doesn’t draw people away from the original venue at Plaza Las Americas. The new venue is going to be at the site of the old La Placita restaurant at Km13. It’s about time the hotel zone had something different to offer than the regular clubs.
