Locusts in Cancun

September 27, 2006 on 11:35 pm | In All, Cancun News, Home Life | No Comments

Reports first surfaced yesterday of large amounts of locusts in Cancun. At first I was sceptical, having lived here for two years I’d never even seen a single locust let alone swarms of them. Reports began to come in on my Cancun Message board from locals of sightings. Locusts in CancunFirst, several miles inland then closer to centro. I took a drive out and saw a few flurries, certainly not swarms.

At about 2pm we started to see a few around our house and then half an hour later there were maybe several hundred. They seemed to take a fancy to our neighbours house which is a yellow colour but totally ignored our white house.

I was starting to get a little fearful for my plants. I have a coconut palm, a pineapple bush, orange, lemon and grapefruit plants, tomatoes and chili peppers growing on our patio.

Fortunately, the locusts didnt seem interested in eating anything. Good job, as I’d have taken a tennis racket out to ‘em.

By all accounts the locusts are heading south and in a day or two’s time there’ll be no sign of them again. Certainly, they wont spoil anyones cancun vacation. In fact it’s one of those spectacles of nature that many, including myself, quite enjoy.

This poor fella though, flew into our wall. So he wont be heading south with his friends.
