Locusts in Cancun

September 27, 2006 on 11:35 pm | In All, Cancun News, Home Life | No Comments

Reports first surfaced yesterday of large amounts of locusts in Cancun. At first I was sceptical, having lived here for two years I’d never even seen a single locust let alone swarms of them. Reports began to come in on my Cancun Message board from locals of sightings. Locusts in CancunFirst, several miles inland then closer to centro. I took a drive out and saw a few flurries, certainly not swarms.

At about 2pm we started to see a few around our house and then half an hour later there were maybe several hundred. They seemed to take a fancy to our neighbours house which is a yellow colour but totally ignored our white house.

Crazy Mexican Ladies

September 23, 2006 on 12:19 pm | In All | No Comments

Sorry I havent been updating the blog much recently. Truth is, I’ve hardly left the house due to working on several new projects, so there’s not much new in the way of pics and video to share. Although we do have some plans to be out and about over the next week, so hopefully I’ll have new stuff to post soon.

However, Thursday was Jannets Mom’s 50th birthday so we went over to help celebrate with her. Jannets Mom goes to a yoga class and invited all her flexible friends over to the party, wow they were crazy ladies! Here’s a quick video of them that you might find funny. Jannets Mom is the lady in light blue. Those girls sure know how to party.

New Cancun Map

I just received a couple of maps recently, one for Cancun and one for Isla Mujeres, courtesy of Laura at Cancun Map.Cancun and Isla Mujeres Map Laura and Perry have been producing these maps for several years now and have expanded both their range and the detail contained within each publication.

The maps are more than just a map though, they are a complete guidebook, and for only $8 (the price of a Whopper Meal at Burger King here in Cancun!)

The Cancun Map for example contains extensive information on 163 places to dine, 143 places to stay, plus details of 27 nightclubs/bars and 70 tours and attractions.

Mexican Independence Day Draws Near

September 8, 2006 on 4:08 pm | In All, Cancun News, Home Life | No Comments

On 15th September 2006 Mexico celebrates it’s 196th Independence Day. Here in Cancun it is always a big party with Flag seller for Mexico Independence Daytens of thousands packing the Palacio Municipal area on Ave. Tulum for live events and the famous Grito. Incidentally, Cinco de Mayo although celebrated in the US, hardly merits a mention here.

For several weeks now the flag and banner sellers have had their brightly coloured stands on many street corners and certainly add a touch of colour to the place.

In 1810 a group of Mexican nationals hatched a plan to overthrow the brutal regime of the Spanish that had occupied their country for the last 300 years. The plan was that the Mexicans would rise up against the Spanish in a War of Independence that would begin on 2 October.

Our 2 Year Anniversary in Cancun - How we got here

September 5, 2006 on 8:54 pm | In All, Before Cancun, Home Life | No Comments

On 1st September 2004 we left the shores of sunny England, for the far distant land of Mexico. Just over two years later we have no regrets, and plan to be here for a long time to come.

This was not a snap decision but a carefully thought out and researched plan that had taken two years or so to achieve. The idea was born because, although I had a reasonably paid job in England with great benefits, I was never going to earn the money required to live in the house I wanted in an area I wanted. After 16 years in the same job and moving up through the ranks every couple of years, the thought of another 25 years of this was depressing to say the least. The excitement of my old job had long since passed…. about 15 years previously!

I had always been interested in computers since my mid teens,
