Computer Mishaps
July 23, 2006 on 1:56 pm | In All, Web Work |Just before I left for my vacation to England my desktop computer stopped working. I took it in to be looked at and it seems like the chip had blown. I took it over to a friend of a friend and left it with him while we were away. It now seems like the whole motherboard is dead and it’s almost certainly beyond repair.
The loss of the desktop PC was not that big a deal as I always used my laptop for most of my webstuff. I’d just buy a new desktop as and when I could. Then I wake up yesterday and Jannet tells me the laptop suddenly shut down on her while she was checking her email and is not rebooting.

I had a look and it was missing a windows file, the only way back was, I thought, via the recovery disc. I have a partitoned drive and keep all my junk on D Drive with the system files on C. I hoped I could just recover the C drive but the recovery process just failed each time. I decide to recover the whole lot and lose a ton of stuff including my email ,some of it going back 10 years when Jannet lived in Mexico and I lived in the UK.
It started off promising, told me it had 7 hours to run to completely reformat both drives. Two hours in and it was still running, but now told me there was 8 hours left to run! ten minutes later it failed again, and repeated attempts encountered the same problem.
Buying a computer here is not an option. As well as being overpriced and underspec, the software is all in Spanish as is the keyboard (not surprisingly).
For now I have borrowed a desktop from a friend and am slowly retrieving all my accounts and software. I need to buy a new Pc soon, but will probably have to fly to the US to do so. I’ve never been there before so that will be interesting.

Thanks Greta, I will do my best to enjoy Miami. With Cheezstk as my guide it may not be too hard.
